Georgina's beauty an endless source of inspiration for artists

WhatsOn Jul 06, 2018 by Ewa Chwojko-Srawley Georgina Advocate

Georgina may be small, but it has more artists per square metre than many a metropolis! And no wonder — it is so beautiful that any artistic soul feels compelled to capture the ever‐changing colours of its shimmering waters, picturesque farms and boundless vistas. To celebrate the 200th anniversary of Georgina, our artists gathered more than 100 of their works to display at the gallery. The favourite themes are the farms, the water, and the people. Yes, in that order! The barns especially, which are, alas, quickly disappearing, capture the attention and imagination of our artists.

Those who live here and those who visit take hundreds of photographs of our beautiful Lake Simcoe all year-round. Those who have talent for painting use their brushes to memorialize fleeting impressions. To my surprise, most artists prefer to depict Lake Simcoe in winter. Quiet, mysterious and spectacular.

The Georgina 200 exhibition is over, but many of the artworks are now available at our gift shop. Please visit us, and browse through hundreds of paintings, artistic photographs, sculpture, and one-of-a-kind handmade gifts created by local artists.

In our Main Gallery you will see the Shades of Water exhibition: paintings and photographs by more than 30 members of the Newmarket Group of Artists. Again, many of them depict Lake Simcoe, but also rivers, streams, oceans, clouds … . It’s all about water, the source of life, and endless inspiration for artistic souls.  Shades of Water ends July 22.
