Sugar Kings push Corvairs to the brink

Sports Apr 20, 2017 by Darryl Smart The Sachem

The Caledonia Pro-Fit Corvairs are in very unfamiliar territory.

That's thanks to a rough second period where the Elmira Sugar Kings scored three times to defeat the defending Sutherland Cup champions 4-3 Wednesday in Elmira.

The Sugar Kings now take a 3-1 stranglehold of their best-of-seven Greater Ontario Hockey League semifinal series.

Klayton Hoelscher was the Sugar Kings’ catalyst. His first of three goals came midway through the first period to give his team the lead.

Twenty-five seconds later, Brandon Lindberg struck back and added another three minutes later to give the Corvairs the lead.

But in the second period, the Sugar Kings poured it on, outshooting the Corvairs 12-11 with Hoelscher adding two more goals, while Jake Brown netted one.

Ryan Punkari had the lone Corvairs response in the frame.

Jonathan Reinhart continued to shut the door for the Sugar Kings, making 44 saves, while Daniel Chenard stopped 32.

The Corvairs now face a do-or-die situation when they host the Sugar Kings on Friday at 7:30 p.m. in Game 5.

ICE CHIPS: In the other Sutherland Cup semifinal, the London Nationals beat the Listowel Cyclones 2-0 Wednesday to take a 3-1 series in that series. Game 5 is Friday in Listowel.
