Stoney Creek's Lori Raudnask offers tips for working from home during coronavirus pandemic

I have worked from my home office since 1988 after I left Stelco to start my own business. In the beginning, it was difficult and took some discipline to become efficient. Here are some tips that have helped me to build a successful business:

Get out of your PJ’s – getting up and dressing like you would going out to work sets the stage for your day. Ladies, put your make up on and do your hair.

Work regular hours – that means start on time, take your breaks and end on time.

Eat lunch and snacks and be prepared with pre-planning your lunches by boiling eggs, having fresh pre-cut veggies ready to eat in the fridge. Enjoy the foods you couldn’t use at work, using the oven.

Invest in a good headset if you're doing your work on the phone.

Let your friends and family know that you are working so to keep their communication the same as if you were at work.

Make a "to-do list" so that you can keep on track during the day.

Stay off social media during work hours.

Create an office space in your home so you aren’t working from a common area where you'll be distracted.

Use Bluetooth headphones and walk while you talk or if you can, take your call outside when the weather is nice.

Now that you don’t have to drive to work, use this time to get more rest or to start a prayer, gratitude or meditation practice.

Do chores before and after your work hours. When I first started working from home I thought it was good to throw laundry in and then that rolled into vacuuming the floor and then it was 10 a.m. before I knew it.

One tip that worked for me as I trained people on the phone around the world was that I put a mirror in front of me on my desk. As I talked to clients, my energy went up as I saw my facial expressions on the phone. This is the time that your energy needs to be high even though you may not feel like it. Stand up while you are on the phone. It elevates your energy.

Have fun with co-workers, using Zoom or Face time to see each other.

Stay positive. If you don’t know how, ask for what you need to work remotely.
