COMMUNITY COLUMNIST: Much to do this year at public school board

I would like to take this time to thank all those in Ward 6 who elected me to represent them as their Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board trustee.

As some of you may know, this is my second time representing Ward 6 as a school trustee. I look forward to bringing your concerns to the board table.

In order to achieve this, I plan to host two public ward meetings each year, specifically to hear your concerns.

I will also be starting my school visits this month. Communication is the key to ensuring our children and families have their voices heard.

I will also be using my space in this community column to let you know what is happening within the HWDSB and our Ward 6 schools.

It has only been one month since I was sworn in as Trustee on Dec. 1, along with my fellow 10 trustees. Over the past month, there have been a lot of information sessions that trustees have attended in order for us to hit the ground running.

At our inaugural meeting, we elected our chair and vice-chair of the board. Trustee Todd White (Ward 5), was elected as chair and trustee Alex Johnstone (Wards 11 and 12), was elected as vice-chair.

We have lots of work ahead starting with hiring a new director of education. We also have to continue the work of previous trustees by looking at accommodation issues across the HWDSB.

This is a lot of work for our first year! It can be done if we work together for all students in our board.

I have found since my last term (2003-2006), trustees have been given more responsibility and have many more meetings to attend. The board has also made many changes toward being more transparent at the board table.

If you are ever interested in knowing what is going on within the board, you are more than welcome to attend our board meetings, read the local media or visit the board’s website (hwdsb.on.ca), where you can also live stream our board meetings.

I look forward to representing my Ward 6 schools.
