Belly dancer is new Concession Street BIA chair

The new chair of the Concession Street Business Improvement Area is a belly dancer with a knack for organization.

Eshe Despres was acclaimed to the position in January after previous chair Jules Gauthier stepped down with three years left in the term.

Despres, who runs Mahasti — The Bellydance Emporium, had been secretary of the BIA board of management and she said it made sense for her to move up to chair as she is familiar with the board and everyone on it.

“We are an energized group,” said Despres.

She noted teaching belly dancing and planning shows over the past 15 years have made her good at organizing things.

The new chair said she plans to continue with the street beautification and event improvement plans of her predecessor.

“I want to continue to help building the profile of Concession Street and let people know about all the businesses we have here,” Despres said.

The BIA is well into planning for the annual Streetfest that runs June 13 and Sidewalk Sounds that has been moved to the third Saturday of each month, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., from May to September.

“She brings some energy and some vitality as a young entrepreneur,” said BIA executive director Cristina Geissler.

The Concession Street BIA includes 153 businesses and has an annual budget of $115,000.
