Metro’s arrival to the Winona Crossing shopping centre appears to be delayed.
The grocery store’s opening at the centre on the corner of Fifty and South Service roads has been pushed to the fall/winter, according to a marketing brochure provided by PenEquity Realty Corporation.
The Stoney Creek News followed up about the supermarket after being told that it would open at the site this summer in January.
“Unfortunately, at this time, we cannot be more specific regarding the timelines,” Metro Ontario Inc. communications specialist Katie Oestreich said in an email on July 16 in response to questions around the grocery store’s progress. “We are very excited to be joining the community.”
The supermarket’s building construction is moving along at the centre, near Costco Wholesale.
Metro, once finished, will mark the first big grocery store for Winona — which continues to boom in terms of development and population.
The last grocery store in the area was IGA on Winona Road.
The closest major supermarket is the Real Canadian Superstore in Grimsby.
Ward 10 Coun. Maria Pearson has called Metro’s arrival “great news.”
Any improved services that surrounding residents can access is always a plus; not everyone is a member of Costco, she said in January.
“I believe it will have a very positive impact for the Winona community,” Pearson said, adding that she remembers going to the IGA for sale items. “It was very small. Winona has grown and deserves to have amenities to serve their community.”
