Stoney Creek’s former Alliance Church renamed ‘Saltfleet Community Centre’

The former Alliance Church building on Highway 8 in Stoney Creek has a new name.

The church, built in 1985, has been renamed the Saltfleet Community Centre by Hamilton politicians.

The City of Hamilton purchased the former church in 2010 at a cost of about $3.2 million with the intention of demolishing the structure and creating a recreation centre for the community. But that project has never happened.

Instead, over the years the building, which sits on 6.38 acres of land at 605 Highway 8, has accommodated a number of local tenants, including the Air Cadets, the Stoney Creek Food Bank, the Stoney Creek Historical Society, Homefront Cancer Services and Seniors Outreach Services.

Additional meeting space has been shared by the City of Hamilton and the Air Cadets with the community.

The city had renamed Alliance Church in 2015 to the City of Hamilton Community Centre, which included a sign being installed on the property. No sign currently identifies the building.

Stoney Creek Coun. Maria Pearson said the new name created confusion among residents. Pearson requested the city change the name to better reflect the community.

The facility naming subcommittee couldn’t approve the request to change the name to the ‘Saltfleet Community Centre’ at its July 20 meeting because there weren’t enough members of the committee in attendance. Instead, Pearson’s motion was deferred to the Aug. 18 council meeting where politicians approved it.
