The federal government will be providing the largest infrastructure funding in  Mohawk College’s 50-year history to build a 90,000-square-feet innovation facility.

“This is a record-setting day for Mohawk,” said Mohawk College President Ron McKerlie during the Sept. 30 announcement at the Fennell Street campus. “It’s an absolute game changer for our students and for their future employers.”

The federal Liberals are contributing $20-million through its Post-Secondary Institutions Strategy Investment Fund to the college’s proposed $54.25 million building, to be located on the north side of the campus next to the engineering technology wing.

The rest of the money will come from the college and the private sector. Mohawk College officials say naming rights for the facility will be announced at a later date.

College officials say the new Centre for Partnership and Innovation, to begin construction in October, will be the largest building on campus, including the David  Braley Athletics and Recreation Centre. The five-storey facility will house 120,000 -square-feet of labs and classrooms.

McKerlie said it the laboratory space will be five times the size of Tim Hortons Field.

“The renewal of our technology program will be the largest edition yet on this campus,” he said.

Hamilton West-Ancaster-Dundas federal Liberal MP Filomena Tassi, along with Hamilton East-Stoney Creek Liberal MP Bob Bratina were on hand to celebrate the contribution.

“This is a once-in-a generational investment,” said Tassi.

Also part of the announcement was Hamilton Liberal MPP Ted McMeekin.

The building, which is scheduled to be substantially completed by the spring of 2018, will also be the first net zero institutional facility, said McKerlie.

That means it will generate as much energy as it consumes, he said.

“It will serve as both a showcase in environmental sustainability for Hamilton as well as a housing lab.”

Over the last six years Mohawk College has seen nearly $90 million in both upgrades to its facilities and new facilities, such as an improved library, the Braley Athletics Centre, the justice and wellness centre and lab and classroom renovations.

Mohawk College in its 2016-17 season has seen a jump in full-time and part-time student enrollment by 1,172 for a total of 30,872.
