UXBRIDGE -- Proposed changes to Uxbridge’s noise bylaw that would have governed the use of all terrain vehicles such as four-wheelers and dirt bikes have been dropped.

In June council considered a report from bylaw staff proposing amendments to prohibit residents from riding dirt bikes or ATVs after 7 p.m. on weekdays, before 10 a.m. or after 5 p.m. on Saturdays, and any time on Sundays or holidays. After a large outcry from residents, staff recommended the amendments be dropped in a report to council at its Nov. 2 committee meeting.

“After much discussion it appears the best approach at this time is to continue with the current bylaw provisions and time contained therein,” read the report from Andre Gratton, manager of municipal law enforcement. “Therefore staff is recommending the amendment not be pursued at this time.”

The current bylaw includes off-road vehicles as a noise generator subject to general noise restrictions, which prohibits noise from the operation of such vehicles between 8 p.m. and 7 a.m. Monday to Saturday, and 8 p.m. to 9 a.m. Sundays and holidays.

Council voted to approve the report, with Mayor Gerri Lynn O’Connor noting that a planned public meeting on the amendments will no longer be needed.

“We won’t be having any public meeting because things haven’t changed,” she explained.

“We’re going to leave the noise bylaw where it is at the present time so all the kerfuffle where people misread this and misinterpreted that they couldn’t drive ATVs on their property is not an issue.”
