LETTER: City should turn school into community centre

Re: Eastmount in disrepair (Jan. 22)

I’m a student at Mohawk College in the recreation and leisure services program. I’m doing my two-year placement with the Mountain Kidz Klub run by Kathy Archer and her many volunteers.

I have seen firsthand the importance and need in this community for the many programs and services Mountain Kidz Klub provides for children, families and seniors. There is a food bank, clothes closet, movie night, after school program, craft and games, community garden, cooking class, sewing class and more.

They have outgrown the space within the centre.

With Eastmount elementary school next door closing in June, it would be nice if the city purchased the school and converted it to a community centre.

That way, Mountain Kidz Klub could expand its outreach programs and Kathy could continue her many programs for the Mountain community.
