Opera singer urges Buchanan Park youngsters to enjoy music

Students at Buchanan Park Elementary School had their questions ready when deep-voiced opera singer Stephen Hegedus dropped by recently.

What’s his favourite opera?

“Mozart’s Marriage of Figaro.”

His favourite composer?

“There are so many good composures to choose from,” said the 35-year-old Toronto resident who settled on Mozart again.

Hegedus said he was impressed with the students’ knowledge of opera and their questions.

“If you introduce a child to any kind of music, especially classical music, they instantly take a liking to it,” Hegedus said. “They hear music and they react usually joyfully.”

The west Mountain school has become well known for its opera club and the productions they put on each spring.

Hegedus told the students said he been singing since Grade One and singing professionally for the last seven years and figures he’s been in as many as 25 productions including a number of lead roles on both sides of the boarder.

Anyone interested in pursuing a career in opera needs to know how to sing in English, French, Italian and German, the “opera languages” Hegedus noted.

In the coming days he’ll be singing in productions of Handle’s Messiah in Sherbrook, Vancouver and Ottawa.

“It’s Messiah season right now,” Hegedus said.
