Eighty-eight employees at a Metro store on the southeast Mountain will be out of a job next month.

The grocery store, located in the Stone Church Square plaza at 1070 Stone Church Rd. East, will be closing Nov. 8.

Staff were told of the closure Sept. 12. Under their collective agreement, they receive severance but cannot bump employees at other locations.

The corporately owned store is being shuttered because it was not meeting its financial objectives, said company spokeswoman Mary-Claude Bacon.

There is no plan for another Metro Inc. store, such as Food Basics, to open in its place, she said.

Last year, Rexall moved out of the plaza to a new building across the street. Dollar Tree is moving into the space the drug store vacated; the company projects an Oct. 29 opening.
