Costco plans expansion

Costco Wholesale Canada has won approval to expand its Ancaster Meadowlands store with a garden centre, gas bar and nearly 3,000 square metres of additional floor space.

The company was granted a minor variance last month to demolish the existing 10,859 square metre big box store and replace it with a new 13,565 square metre store. The redevelopment will include fewer parking spaces than the city typically requires. Once the new store opens and the old store is demolished, the site will include 636 parking spaces, which is 179 spaces less than the existing bylaw.

In comments presented to the city’s committee of adjustment, city staff said the increase in gross floor area, from the current maximum of 11,613 square metres to 13,565, “will not negatively impact the character of the area and scale of development for the lot that will be maintained.”

City staff said the reduction of required parking spaces “is supportable, as there will be sufficient parking space for commercial use.”
