McMaster goes outside for new president

McMaster University has looked to Queen’s for their next president.The university’s board of governors approved Oct. 15 the appointment of Patrick Deane, the vice-principal of Queen’s University to replace the departing Peter George. Mr. Deane will take over July 1. The appointment is for a five-year term.Mr. Deane becomes the seventh president and only the second person appointed from outside McMaster to become president of the university since the position was created in 1950.The selection committee included faculty, student, staff and board of governors’ representatives. The search for a new president began earlier this year.Mr. Deane was born and raised in South Africa where he read English and Law at the University of Witwatersrand. He immigrated to Canada in 1978, and studied English Literature at the University of Western Ontario earning his masters of arts in 1980 and his Ph.D. in 1985.He began his academic career at the University of Toronto, but returned to Western Ontario in 1988 to join the English Department. He was appointed chair in 1997.In 2001 Mr. Deane became the vice-president of academics at the University of Winnipeg. He became acting president of Winnipeg in 2002. He took over the Queen’s position in 2005.Mr. George will be completing his 15th year as president of McMaster University. He has been at the university for 45 years.
