Citizens have confidence in police board

Re: Group asks minister to intervene on hiring of new police chief, Oct. 2 The News.

The chair of the Community Coalition Against Racism and four other activists feel the new police chief should be a person of colour.

He cited the wrongful arrest of Michael Dixon, a black man who spent four days in jail for a jewelry store robbery he didn’t commit, as the most prominent example of racial profiling.

I certainly am not condoning how this case was handled, although my recollection was he very easily could have been a person of Italian or Middle East extraction — in other words, white.

I believe the majority of the citizens of Hamilton have complete confidence in the police board choosing the right person for the job.

The police board knows it doesn’t matter if the next police chief is white, black or sky-blue pink — as long as he’s the “absolute best” candidate for the job.
