Hydro users are feeling the heat over HST

The HST is too much of a jolt each month for Ontario hydro users, says NDP leader Andrea Horwath.

Horwath, who is also the MPP for Hamilton Centre, is calling on the provincial government to remove the extra eight per cent imposed on each bill by the HST. Prior to July 1, when the harmonized tax came into effect, only the five-per-cent GST was imposed on bills.

“People are being jolted every time they open their hydro bills. Dalton McGuinty’s HST on everything from keeping the lights on to cooking dinner has made life more expensive for Hamilton families,” said Horwath.

“Taking the eight per cent HST off hydro bills would make life a little more affordable and give Hamiltonians a needed break.”

The NDP has launched a website — HSToffHydro.com — to promote the effort.
