Avalanche Atom AAs rock Motor City

The Ancaster Avalanche Atom AA team brought home the hardware from their recent trip to Detroit’s Motown Cup.

The weekend started with the Avs playing the Mt. Clemons Wolves on the big ice at Joe Louis Arena. After beating the Wolves 7-1 and then dispatching the Detroit Compuware team 3-1, the Avs took to the ice against their friends from down the QEW, the Mississauga Jets.

The kids played one of their best games all year and were tied 0-0 midway through the third period. Although the Avalanche were buzzing all over, it was the Jets who scored two quick ones and then added an empty net goal to beat the Avs 3-0.

On the strength of their 2-1 record, Ancaster advanced to Sunday’s championship game, which turned out to be a Mississauga re-match. With the Avalanche recovering from a late night after attending Saturday’s Colorado/Detroit shootout game, and the flu bug also hitting the team, the Jets jumped out to a 3-0 lead by the end of the first period.

The Avs battled back to make a game of it, ultimately settling for a 6 –3 silver medal finish.

It was a terrific weekend for not only the players but also their families.
