Man arrested following bomb scare in east end Sunday night

Residents were evacuated or told to “shelter in place” and a roadway was closed due to a bomb scare in the east end near Ottawa Street North and Cannon Street East Sunday night.

Hamilton police were dispatched to the area just before 7:30 p.m. on June 26. Officers arrested a 50-year-old man who was carrying “what appeared to be an explosive device,” according to a police news release.

The man was charged with uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm as well as possession of explosives.

The police explosive disposal unit “examined the device and safely recovered it,” said the news release. No additional information about the man, or the explosive device, has yet been provided by police.
