A Stoney Creek delivery station is part of a major Ontario expansion announced Sept. 9 by Amazon.com.
Amazon plans to open two fulfilment centres in Hamilton and Ajax in 2021. Hamilton’s new 855,000-sq-ft fulfilment centre in Mount Hope near the John C. Munro Hamilton International Airport is expected to bring 1,500 jobs to town.
The Hamilton and Ajax facilities combined are expected to create more than 2,500 positions. Both centres are slated to open next year.
At the Hamilton fulfilment centre, employees will work alongside Amazon robotics to pick, pack and ship small items to customers such as books, electronics and toys.
“We’re thrilled to continue expanding our operations in Ontario with our newest fulfilment centres in Hamilton and Ajax,” said Sumegha Kumar, director of Canadian customer fulfilment operations for Amazon Canada, in a news release.
“We’ve had great success with the talented workforce in Ontario, and we look forward to creating an additional 2,500 full-time jobs with competitive pay and benefits starting on day one.”
“Thank you, Amazon Canada, for investing in our community,” Hamilton Mayor Fred Eisenberger said in a news release. “This further highlights that Hamilton remains the top destination in the province to grow, innovate and do business.”
An Amazon spokesperson said in an email the new Stoney Creek delivery station will be located at 869 Barton St., between Jones and Glover roads. That facility is also expected to open some time in 2021.
Packages are transported to delivery stations from Amazon fulfilment and sorting centres before being loaded into vehicles for delivery.
In an email, Amazon did not provide a specific number of jobs that will be created at the Stoney Creek location. But a company spokesperson said the new delivery stations are expected to “create hundreds of permanent, full-time and part-time jobs.”
Interested job applicants are advised to stay tuned for hiring information as the new facilities prepare to launch. Job seekers can sign up for alerts at amazondelivers.jobs to be notified when roles are posted.
In addition to offering entrepreneurs the opportunity to build their own small business delivering Amazon packages, Amazon says the delivery centres will provide opportunities for independent contractors to be their own boss and create their own schedule, delivering for Amazon Flex.
Amazon is also adding delivery stations in Kitchener, Vaughan and Toronto (Etobicoke and Scarborough). The Etobicoke site has already launched, and the Kitchener site is expected to launch later this year.
Amazon employs more than 21,000 full- and part-time workers at the company’s fulfilment centres, corporate offices and development centres in Canada overall.
