Upper Stoney Creek is getting its second pot shop with the July 17 opening of the Sessions Cannabis store in the plaza at the southwest corner of Stone Church and Upper Mount Albion roads.
The shop is one of six planned in Hamilton for the Binbrook-based chain, which is poised to open 23 locations across Ontario by this fall.
CEO Steven Fry said the Stoney Creek Sessions will be Hamilton’s largest dispensary at 3,200 square feet and build upon the experience of the Canna Cabana he opened at The Centre on Barton in April 2019, the city’s first legal pot shop.
“We have worked very hard with our focus on bringing an elevated customer experience to the cannabis retail market along with the most competitive pricing,” he said in a news release.
“The space will be a bright, clean and welcoming environment where customers can ask questions and receive one-on-one assistance from knowledgeable staff.”
Upper Stoney Creek’s first cannabis shop, Tokyo Smoke, opened in February near the liquor store in the Fortinos plaza at the corner of Upper Centennial Parkway and Rymal Road East.
Lower Stoney Creek has one store — Hunny Pot at 40 Centennial Pkwy. North, across from Eastgate Square, opened in June — but three are awaiting approval from the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario.
They include Neku Cannabis at the Attic pizzeria and Cannabis Creek Co., both on King Street in downtown Stoney Creek, and Mihi at the Winona Crossing Shopping Centre.
Only the Attic application has attracted vocal opposition, including from neighbours and the area’s councillor, Chad Collins.
Other stores Sessions expects to open in Hamilton this summer include ones at 712 Mohawk Rd. East in the Food Basics plaza by Upper Gage Avenue; 675 Rymal Rd. East in the No Frills plaza by Upper Sherman Avenue; and 1096 Barton St. East, across from the Centre on Barton.
Two shops are slated for the fall — in the FreshCo plaza at 2537 Highway 56 in Binbrook, and in the Metro grocery store plaza by the corner of King Street East and Rosedale Avenue.
