Food Basics opens new store on the Mountain

Community Sep 27, 2019 Hamilton Mountain News

Food Basics opened its seventh store in Hamilton at 751 Upper James on Sept 26.

The 36,000-square-foot discount grocery store replaces the Metro store that closed in July.

It features a wide variety of grocery items including fresh fruit and vegetables, organic products, ready-to-eat meal options, beer and wine, an OLG lottery outlet and a pharmacy.

The store employs about 75 people, about half of them returning from the previous Metro store.

For Mountain shoppers the grocery store has had a few different looks over the years. It was once an Ultra Food and Drug Mart and later a Barn after the Barn chain was purchased by A&P in 1999. The Metro name was added in 2005 after Metro acquired A&P.
