Just The Facts

The Les Chater Family YMCA on Rymal Road has teamed up with the GERAS Centre for Aging Research at McMaster University to offer a new fitness program for seniors with early cognitive and mobility challenges.

Twenty-five seniors drop by the Mountain Y on Monday and Wednesday afternoons to take part in the GERAS Dance pilot project.

The participants go through a variety of dance and dancelike movements from seated and standing positions.

The focus of the project is to look at how different types of exercise routines like dancing can improve cognition and mobility in seniors.

Results from an earlier pilot project indicated dance can improve balance and walking ability.

It also had positive effects on cognitive matters such as memory and attention.

The program is also being offered at YMCAs in Grimsby and Oakville and there are plans to expand further in January.
