You could call their upcoming performance at the Winona Peach Festival a homecoming of sorts, but in many ways, Brent and Brian Wirth never really left.
After winning over audiences across Canada during their performance on CTV’s The Launch, Brent and Brian, who represent half of the pop band Liteyears, are looking forward to connecting with local audiences this month.
Liteyears has enjoyed tremendous exposure since their January appearance on The Launch. The reality show featured 30 unsigned Canadian artists vying for an opportunity to record and release a song under the guidance of renowned guest mentors.
The band performed for a team of industry professionals, including American singer-songwriter Ryan Tedder of OneRepublic. Along with their original song, I Feel You In My Bones, the band performed a cover rendition of Tedder’s hit, Counting Stars.
Although the band wasn’t selected to have their single recorded and released, their appearance has helped Liteyears gain the kind of recognition band members were yearning for when they released their first EP album, American Towns, in 2016.
“Having that much reach … it is a game changer in a lot of ways,” said Brent, 30. “It builds greater familiarity.”
Liteyears is looking forward to an array of concert performances over the coming weeks, including the Peach Festival and an Aug. 10 appearance at Taps Brewery in Niagara Falls.
As youth musicians, the Wirth brothers always looked forward to the peach festival. As students with Stoney Creek’s Conservatory of Musical Studies, Brent and Brian played at the festival each year, often as part of the E.D. Smith Fun Factory but sometimes on as part of the festival’s Sunday main stage entertainment.
Brent and Brian grew up just a short walk from the festival grounds at Winona Park. They honed their skills in the music program at Orchard Park Secondary School.
On Aug. 25 at 9:30 p.m., Brent will be performing lead vocals at the peach festival with guitarist Brian, in addition to other Liteyears members Nick Haberer (bass, vocals) and Matt Anthony (drums).
As well, the band is playing a special album fundraiser event Aug. 10 at Taps Brewery in Niagara Falls, at 4680 Queen St. It’s a licensed all-ages venue, with entry beginning at 6 p.m. Admission is $10.
“They have a really cool outdoor stage,” said Brian, 32.
The band’s ultimate plan is to travel out west to work with a Juno Award-winning producer.
“We’ve been writing and recording the last couple of months,” said Brent. “And hopefully we’ll finish it off.”
Brent said a new single is in the works sometime before the end of this year as well. The band hopes to record and release an album by next spring.
In the meantime, Liteyears is sharing a new collection of songs the band hopes will resonate with live audiences.
Brian is thrilled to be returning to the peach festival, this time as a member of Liteyears.
“I’ve literally wanted to play that Saturday (headline spot),” he said. “Being from Winona, to me has a lot of meaning to be playing that.”
