The third prize in the ArcelorMittal Dofasco Pinnacle Best-in-Fair Award went to Anika Gupta from Westdale Secondary School for her project, Quantifying Lung Macrophages to Understand Increased Susceptibility to Bacterial Pneumonia with Age.
The BASEF Chairman’s Award was won by Owen Belbeck from St. Augustine in Dundas. His project is entitled Static Sparks.
Five high school projects have been selected to compete at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair in Pittsburg, Pa., in mid-May, including Gupta’s project.
Sixteen students with top projects will advance to the Canada Wide Science Fair in May in Ottawa. Among the winners were Mitchell Clapperton, Guy B. Brown in Waterdown, for his project entitled Automated Bottle Opener, and Vidthiya Jayanahtan from Westdale for The Effect of Green Tea on the Growth of Mung Beans Exposed to Varying Concentrations of Salinity.
