The president for the Wentworth District chapter of the Federated Women’s Institutes of Ontario is leading the charge on bringing another branch to Stoney Creek.
Edith Colling, whose chapter of the FWIO includes branches in Binbrook, Rockton, Strabane, Troy/Lynden, Westover and Woodburn, says though the Women’s Institutes’ charter branch is in Stoney Creek, it meets once a year, so she and others are looking to form a new group in the community that’s active regularly.
“With the FWIO’s blessing, the hope is to call it Janet Lee,” she said.
Colling took the lead on the effort after Alyssa Gomori, curator of Erland Lee Museum, came up with the idea of starting another branch.
The pair also are receiving support from other members of surrounding Women’s Institutes, with the women gathering for an inaugural meeting at the museum — the birthplace of the WI — on Feb. 28 to discuss the focus of the new branch.
Colling said that focus includes advocacy for different initiatives.
The first main goal is raising awareness and funds for Lyme disease, she said.
“This is something the FWIO is championing and working on,” Colling said. “We’d like to organize an event in support of the cause in Stoney Creek. When that’s going to happen, I’m not sure, but the hope would be in May.”
Colling said while the formalities are still being ironed out for the branch, she’s encouraging anybody interested in the group to attend its second meeting on March 28 at the museum.
“It’s open to anyone, individuals of all ages and backgrounds, who are looking to make a difference in the community,” she said.
