Joanne Burghardt chosen as Oshawa torch bearer for Pan Am Games

OSHAWA -- Joanne Burghardt grew up in Oshawa and has worked at Metroland Media Group Ltd.’s Durham Region Division, where she is now editor-in-chief, since she was 19.

The now 54 year old started running when she was 50 and is proud to be chosen by Metroland as one of the Oshawa torch bearers for the Pan Am Games.

“I’m looking forward to the community getting excited and Oshawa rallying towards the events,” said Mrs. Burghardt.

Shortly after the Pan Am Games wrap up, the Parapan Games kick off with the torch relay touching down in Oshawa on Aug. 4.

There will be two Parapan Am flames, one leaving Ottawa and one leaving Niagara Falls and they’ll meet in Toronto on Aug. 6 to join together as one flame.

Oshawa residents are invited to apply to be Parapan Am Games torch bearers by visiting www.TORONTO2015.org/torch-relay. Torch bearers must be 13 or older by Aug. 3 and further details are available on that website.

“We’re excited that Oshawa will host the TORONTO 2015 Parapan Am Games Torch Relay here on Tuesday, Aug. 4 and we look forward to welcoming the Parapan Am flame as we showcase our unique heritage and sporting traditions,” said Mayor John Henry.
