Cardinal Newman Catholic Secondary School students and staff hopped on stationary racing bikes, pedalled to heart-pounding music and sweated it out for the Coast to Coast Against Cancer Foundation’s Inside Ride Monday.
About 50 teams participated in the ride, which raises funds for children and their families living with cancer.
The school’s Run 4 Their Lives club organized the event, with more than 300 students and staff helping to raise just more than $8,000 for the cause.
“The Inside Ride is such an energizing event that really builds school spirit, especially when we can celebrate the successes of our own students,” club advisor and teacher Marisa Mariella said, adding the event this year was dedicated to Grade 12 student Jacob Binkosky, who was diagnosed with Burkitt lymphoma last year. “Now, after treatment, surgery and many prayers from our school community, Jacob is cancer-free.
“When we asked him about participating in this event (as a volunteer), he didn’t hesitate; he really is an inspiration to everyone by reminding us that hope and resiliency are so important in life.”
Cardinal Newman took part in its first Coast to Coast Against Cancer Foundation Inside Ride in 2010.
Since then, students and staff have raised nearly $20,000 for the ride’s causes, including community support programs, oncology camps, research scholarships and other areas, which contribute to inspiring hope and improving prognoses for children and their families impacted by cancer.
“The event is awesome because it raises awareness about cancer and how the disease affects not only the people diagnosed with it, but also their family members,” 18-year-old Binkosky said. “A lot of people just think cancer’s a disease and they don’t know how it really affects those around you. Family members, friends… are touched by it, as well.”
Binkosky said it was “really cool” seeing students and staff come together in his honour.
“It’s really nice to know that the school was behind me – I know they were behind me the whole time – but having the event dedicated to me really makes this special,” he said. “It’s not just for me; it’s for everyone who’s been touched by cancer here. It holds personal meaning for the people riding, as well.”
