AJAX -- The Pan Am and Parapan Am torches will be making their way through Ajax.

Tracey Vaughan-Barrett, the director of recreation and culture, said the torch relay through the town has tentatively been scheduled for June 6 of next year. It will be in Ajax for eight hours and will go through most of the community.

Ajax is hosting the men’s and women’s baseball and softball competitions during the games, which will run from July 10 to 26. The Parapan games run from Aug. 7 to 15.

The torch will be lit in a traditional ceremony in Teotihuacan, Mexico before coming to Canada on May 30. The relay will last 41 days and travel through more than 130 communities before reaching Toronto on July 10 for the opening ceremonies.

About 3,000 torchbearers will be needed, including 50 in Ajax, Ms. Vaughan-Barrett told council’s general government committee last week.

She said, “It’s an open process and any community member can apply” to be a torchbearer.

When the Pan Am torch is in Ajax, ceremonies will be held at the Town hall and at the Audley Recreation Centre, next to the President’s Choice Ajax Pan Am Ballpark. The ceremonies at the recreation centre will have a 1940s-50s theme, with the Bomb Girls, an ice cream social and a jazz band, Ms. Vaughan-Barrett noted.

The Parapan Am Torch Relay will be a five-day journey along the Lake Ontario Waterfront Trail. There will be two Parapan Am flames being lit on Aug. 3, one in Ottawa and the other in Niagara Falls. The opening ceremonies for the Parapan Am Games is set for Aug. 7 in Toronto and the Parapan Am torch is tentatively scheduled to come through Ajax on Aug. 6.

The cost of the torch relay through Ajax is pegged at about $10,000.
