Nupi Gokhale, director of Hairspray for Theatre Ancaster’s November production, checks notes with Shawn Oakes, music director.

Move and groove with Hairspray

Big musical. Big comedy. Big hair.

Theatre Ancaster’s auditions for this Tony-award winning Broadway musical comedy that warms the hearts of all ages take place May 28, 29 and 30 at 7 p.m for all singers and June 3 for all potential cast dancers and singers at 1 p.m. at the Old Firehall Arts Centre, 334 Wilson St. E. in downtown Ancaster.

“It’s an up-beat, fun-loving, musical look at the complex world of the 1960s when big issues were fought by people with real courage,” said Nupi Gokhale, director of the show, “and of course, in this show, with big hair. I can’t wait to get started.”

Shawn Oakes, music director, said people with great voices who can move and groove are needed for the show.

“It’s an absolutely first rate, lovable show with big hit after big hit,” he said. πYou can’t stop the beat from beginning to end.”

The musical is set against the serious issue of integration during the 1960s. The fight for equal rights takes place with song and dance as plus-size teen heroine Tracy Turnblat and her new African-American friends break down barriers on the super-white, super-slim world of TV dance shows in America.

Adults, teens and children from all ethnic backgrounds have choice lead roles, supporting roles and chorus parts to audition for in this show.

“We look for an all-star cast who want to work hard and dance and sing their hearts out. It’s a blockbuster of a show,” said Gokhale.
