But the people of Benalmadena, Spain will be treated to a taste of Canadian culture this month, thanks to a local dance studio.
A contingent of 21 competitive dancers from Lois Laxton Dance Studio is preparing to visit Benalmadena this month as part of its 2014 Fiesta Spain Performance Tour.
Along with an original dance performance set to the music of Canadian crooner Michael Bublé, the performance will include the playing of O Canada, as well as the distribution of Canada flags and pins to audience members. The dancers include 20 females and one male, ranging in age from nine to 23.
Lois Laxton competitive dance director Jasmina Salman said the studio has visited Spain numerous times before, but this month’s trip will be the first visit for many of its current dancers. The group will perform four times during the trip, which lasts from July 14-25. Performances will feature a mixture of tap, musical theatre, hip hop and swing dances.
“We’ve turned it into a little bit of a variety show,” said Salman who leads the group along with studio director Elyse Hutchison.
Salman said the dancers have been greeted warmly in previous trips.
“It’s a very proud moment for all of the dancers, instructors and parents that are going,” she said.
Along with showcasing their skills on stage, the dancers will have opportunities for sightseeing and watching a professional Flamenco show. They also plan to visit the area’s historic churches, monasteries and to do some shopping.
A trip to Tangiers, Morocco, is on the agenda, where the dancers can visit an ancient open air market, a traditional carpet shop and maybe even ride a camel.
The studio held its annual gala last Friday, which featured a Spanish-inspired program at the Grand Olympia Banquet Centre.
