Hairspray bubbles with upbeat singing and dancing

Hairspray is a party…a giant, fun-filled evening of music and family celebration from Theatre Ancaster. The songs are bright and bouncy from Good Morning Baltimore to You Can’t Stop the Beat.

That’s the secret, the great 60s beat. The dancers move, the singers follow, and suddenly the whole auditorium is rocking.

“It’s catching,” laughed director Nupi Gokhale, “Tina Rath, our choreographer, has done it again.”

“It’s such great music,” said Rath, “I love it, the dancers love it, and I’m so lucky to be working with so many talented performers.”

Tina Rath is a dancing dynamo herself and the demanding, dynamic leader of Theatre Ancaster’s Hairspray choreography. As a long time dancer and owner of pure Rhythm Dance in Ancaster, Ms Rath has worked with Theatre Ancaster from the days before it was even incorporated.

“Dance is dear to my heart, and so is Ancaster and this company.”

Rath attracts quality, and is known for her innovation and no-nonsense approach.

“In dance, everything counts, and everyone. Moves must be precise, sharp or fluid as called for by the music and the words. There’s no room for hiding in the back row or thinking ‘That’s good enough’. ”

Rath has three assistants who help drill steps and polish dances when studio demands call. Carissa Bowerman, Jenn Cooper, and Megan Robb are all young adult professionals and lead dancers in Hairspray who have danced all their lives and teach dance themselves.

“They are wonderful dancers, and wonderful people to work with. They provide leadership and excitement to what we do.”

Audiences can catch this Hairspray excitement onstage beginning Nov 16 at 8:00 p.m. Evening performances continue Nov 17, 23, 24, 30 and Dec 1 with matinees on Nov 18, 25 and Dec 1 at 2:00 p.m.  All performances take place in the 700 soft seat Theatre Auditorium at Ancaster High.

Tickets can be reserved in person by visiting the box office in the West Wing Foyer just outside the Theatre Auditorium at Ancaster High School, 374 Jerseyville Rd West at Meadowbrook on weekdays from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. and two hours before each performance. Adults $28; Seniors $23; Students and Children $12.  Tickets can also be reserved by calling 905-304-SHOW (7469).
