Steven Knowles will be bringing in fresh produce every day to his new Concession Street store.
Urban Market (knowlesfarms.com) will feature 27 to 35 different fruits and vegetables daily, covering the gamut of what would be available in a typical grocery store, he says.
“Customers are going to come here because the lettuce I have here today was bought today, not three days ago,” says Knowles, a lifelong Mountain resident who lives a block away from his new store.
The Urban Market, an 800-square-foot store dealing only in produce, is located at 560 Concession St., formerly the home of Mountain Bookstore.
Knowles grows garlic and pumpkins on a farm in Grimsby that he has worked for three years and is making arrangements with local producers to supply fresh fruits and vegetables. As a fresh commodity buyer for a wholesale company, he will also be getting produce daily from the Ontario Food Terminal.
“People are more willing to pay for local, based on a flavour standpoint, based on an ethical standpoint and just supporting local businesses,” says Knowles.
Urban Market’s grand opening is Saturday. It will be open Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m.-6 p.m. (until 7 p.m. Thursday and Friday).
