Orchard Park students Cayleigh Haw and Courtney Bender joined students from across Hamilton at Mohawk College Stoney Creek campus Oct. 25 for the Living the Environment 8 Conference.

“We listened to keynote speaker Sapphire Singh, who we found very informative and inspiring,” said Haw. “We also took part in an environmental scavenger hunt, where we had the opportunity to hear from a number of presenters from across the city teaching us about the numerous environmental initiatives taking place throughout Hamilton.”

While exploring the booths, Haw and Bender pledged for OP to create a second vegetable garden.

“We also attended two workshops, including one where we learned about bees and made candles out of beeswax, in addition to discovering the “awesomeness” of bats,” said Bender.

At the conference, OP was recognized for its environmental contribution.

“At Orchard Park our environmental group EPIC (Environmental Protection Initiatives Club) is going to strive to implement what we have learned at this conference,” Bender said. “We hope to continue our environmental success at OP and inspire others to start environmental initiatives in their school and community.
