Helen Hunt and John Hawkes give Oscar worthy performances in The Sessions

Ancaster Film Fest begins its 10th season

The Ancaster Film Fest begins its 10th season with a double feature.

On Monday, Jan. 7, AFF will screen two likely Oscar nominated films. The Sessions will screen at 1 and 7:15 p.m. only and Anna Karenina will screen at 4 p.m. only.  The box office opens at 12:15, 3:15 and 6:15 respectively. There are a limited number of seats available for non members who may attend for $9 at the matinees and $10 at the evening screenings.

The Sessions is based on the poignantly optimistic autobiographical writings of California-based journalist and poet Mark O’Brien and tells the story of a man confined to an iron lung who is determined – at age 38 – to lose his virginity. With the help of his therapists after discussions with his priest, he sets out to make his dream a reality.  The film stars John Hawkes and Helen Hunt and they are both expected to get Oscar nominations. Note that the film is rated 18A due to many scenes of nudity and sexual situations and discussions.  The Sessions was last year’s Sundance audience award winner and has received many other awards and nominations over the year.

The third collaboration of Academy Award nominee Keira Knightley with acclaimed director Joe Wright, following the award-winning box office successes Pride & Prejudice and Atonement, is a bold, theatrical new vision of the epic story of love, adapted from Leo Tolstoy’s timeless novel by Academy Award winner Tom Stoppard. The story powerfully explores the capacity for love that surges through the human heart. As Anna (Kiera Knightley) questions her happiness and marriage, change comes to all around her.

The Ancaster Film Fest has donated about $110,000, from its proceeds over the past nine years to charities and service organizations. Proceeds from the Jan. 7 screenings will go to the Hamilton Out of the Cold program.
