The Westmount Wildcats girl’s field hockey squad is off to an 0-2 start at the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations tournament in Ottawa.

The Wildcats lost 3-0 to Sir John A. Macdonald Secondary School from Waterloo and 1-0 to John McCrae Secondary School from Ottawa on Thursday.

Westmount faces Robert F. Hall Catholic high school from Caledon East on Friday morning.

“We know it’s going to be stiff competition,” said midfielder Eryn Brown, a 17-year-old Grade 12 student, who helped the Wildcats capture their first Hamilton public high school field hockey crown since 1977 followed by a win at the Southern Ontario Southern Ontario Secondary Schools Association championship last month. “It’s what we’ve been working for since Grade 9.”

The Wildcats moved from Division 2 to Division 1 play three years ago.

Wildcats defender Joyce Moore noted the back end of the team wasn’t overly challenged through the season and she expects to change at OFSAA.

“We haven’t really had a chance to show off our stuff as much as the forwards have so I’m excited to kind of be challenged,” said the 17-year-old Grade 12 student.

Julia Bobiak, also a Grade 12 student, said the senior players want to finish their last few days of high school field hockey on a high note.

“We have to go in with confidence,” the 16-year-old defender. “We have to remember, sticks down, keep the ball out of the circle (in their own end) and try your best to let no goals in.”

Wildcats’ assistant coach Andrea Manto said playing in the provincial championships is going to be a great experience for the team.

“We’re going to play our hearts out,” Manto said.
