Wildcats finish 1-2 at OFSAA

Coach says field hockey squad was competitive in each game

By Mark Newman, News staff

Sofia Fox said it was a “wonderful experience” for the team.

The head coach of the Westmount Wildcats girl’s field hockey squad said her troops were contenders in each game they played following one win and two losses in pool play at the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations tournament in Ottawa last weekend.

“It was great to play with so many other good teams in the province,” Fox said.

Game one saw the Wildcats drop a 3-0 decision to Sir John A. Macdonald from Waterloo.

Fox noted her troops held the powerful Macdonald squad to a scoreless draw in the first half.

“Our team was playing fabulously,” Fox said. “But we couldn’t keep the level of play going in the second half.”

Macdonald would go on to the OFSAA final where they were edged 1-0 by Resurrection from Kitchener.

Game two saw John McCrae of Ottawa edge the Wildcats 1-0 on a goal that was scored in the final six minutes of the second half.

“That was a heartbreaker,” Fox said.

The Westmount team finished the tournament on a positive note with a 3-0 win over Robert F. Hall from Caledon East.

Summer-Jane Chowen, Eryn Brown and Julia McKinley scored for the Wildcats.

“We definitely walked away with our chins up,” said Fox, who noted all three games were played in cold and drizzle.

She expects to lose seven or eight players to graduation but remains optimistic there is a good group of junior players who will be able to step up next year.

The city public school and SOSSA championships and trip to OFSAA caps Westmount’s rebuilding program after the Wildcats moved from Division 2 to Division 1 three years ago.

Fox noted the journey has also been a learning experience for her as she never played field hockey as a youth and she has spent a lot of time learning about the game and all of its nuances and strategies.

“It’s been a huge learning curve for me,” Fox said.
