Watson shines as McCoys outscore opponents 17-2

By Larry Robertson, Special to The News

Cam Watson turned in one of his best Allan Cup Hockey scoring performances with a 10-point weekend as his Dundas Real McCoys edged the Brantford Blast 3-2 last Friday night, and then trounced the Norwood Vipers 14-0 Sunday to move into first place.

Next up for the McCoys is Pink in the Rink on Friday night, Jan. 31, when they take on the Whitby Dunlops at Grightmire arena.  The Real McCoys will be donating $1 from each ticket sold for the game to the Juravinski Hospital and Cancer Centre – CIBC Breast Assessment Centre.  Game time is 7:30 p.m.

Last Friday against the Blast, Watson scored twice, including the game-winner on a power play at 12:50 of the third period, with Scott Mifsud and Justin Davis drawing the assists, as Dundas edged Brantford before a near capacity crowd.

Watson put the McCoys in front 1-0 midway through the first period and Matt Smith restored the lead 13 minutes into the middle period with a power-play goal. Mifsud set up both of Watson’s goals.

“Our games with Brantford are always good ones and last Friday sure was a fun one,” said coach Ken Mann.

Two nights later in Norwood, the McCoys cut loose and filled the net behind Vipers goaltender Ryan Aschaber.  Dundas goalie Mike Mole was the recipient of the highest shutout recorded by a Dundas Real McCoys goalkeeper as the McCoys outshot Norwood 40-28.

“The league mandates, and rightfully so, that a club has to take at least 13 skaters and two goalies on the road,” said McCoys president and general manager Don Robertson. “We did that on Sunday and they (Norwood) only had 11 players, so the score speaks for itself.”

Robertson said Matt Smith on defence has added size, experience and depth to the team.

“We still have a couple more things to do with our lineup before everything is finalized.  For now our focus is on our back-to back-games with Whitby this weekend.”

2014 Allan Cup Tournament packages for all 11 tournament games in April are available for $200 each.
