Underdog Braves beat No. 1 Knights for spot in final

St. Jean de Brebeuf pulled off their second big upset of the week in senior boys basketball.

The sixth-placed Braves beat No. 1 St. Thomas More 52-49 Thursday night in a hard-fought Hamilton Catholic high school semi-final game.

The Braves led after each quarter and held a 12-point lead early in the fourth frame, but the Knights fought back to lead by a point before the Braves rallied in the final minute.

J.R. Calura had 13 points to lead the Braves; Mohan Kazi had eight and Veron Kalonji had seven.

Top scorers for the Knights were Joel Clarke with 18, followed by Jaylen Clarke (13) and Ryan Doornick (12).

On Tuesday, the Braves upset the third-place Cathedral Gaels in their quarter-final match.

In the other semi-final, Cardinal Newman beat St. Mary’s.

The Hamilton Catholic boys basketball championships for all three age divisions is Thursday, Feb. 20 at McMaster’s Burridge Gym.
