First preseason game goes Thursday
Another season of junior hockey is underway at the Dave Andreychuk-Mountain Arena.
About 55 rookies hoping to make the Hamilton Red Wings roster will be back on the ice tonight (Tuesday).
“We’ve got some good, young talent,” said head coach John McDonald, who is looking to ice a fast-skating club this season.
McDonald said he expected to start making cuts tonight with the hope of getting down to 35-40 players by Thursday when the rookie squad hosts Mississauga in a preseason game at 7:30 p.m.
McDonald said about 30 rookies will remain with the team after Thursday’s game.
They will join veterans and signed players at training camp next week
In other preseason action, the Red Wings visit Mississauga on Aug. 21, host Oakville at 7:30 p.m. on Aug. 22, visit Orangeville on Aug 23, visit Oakville on Aug. 24 and wrap up preseason action on home ice against Orangeville on Aug. 29 at 7:30 p.m.
The Red Wings open the regular season in Burlington on Sept. 7 and their home opener, also against Burlington, is slated for Sept. 9 at 7:30 p.m.
