The Ancaster Avalanche Novice Select hockey team won silver at the 15th Chedoke Christmas Select Tournament in a dramatic final game against Lawfield that ended in a 5-1 loss.
Zachary Gratton, Bradley Hillman, Quinten Lisle, Noah Drury, Jacob Stegne and Thomas Domangue led the scoring over the three-day, six-game tournament. Assists came from Callum Holt, Zachary Gratton, Noah Drury, Jesse Hay, Ben Miller, Carter Susi, Nick Lehman, Thomas Domangue, Jacob Stegne, and Quinten Lisle. Goalies Matthew Pocrnic and Kyle Magri dazzled spectators with stops against teams from across the Greater Hamilton and Toronto areas.
Gratton, Hillman, Pocrnic and Adam Treffry were awarded player of the game awards. Defenders Devyn Bhatia, Drake Desroches, Tyler Ruthowsky and Joseph Stechey kept opponents’ scoring opportunities to a minimum. Each player brought heart and grit to every game.
“I am extremely proud of the kids for all of their hard work and effort,” said head coach Dan Lisle. “The team has only been together for about six weeks and the kids are starting to buy into team play and seeing the results of it. I am excited to see what lays ahead.”
The Novice Select team banded together and started playing less than a week after tryouts and won their first game before even finding ice for a single practice.
Led by coaches Lisle, Darren Drury, Darren Hay, Chris Gratton and trainer Ben Lehman, success continued through December as the team prevailed against Guelph, Brantford and Stoney Creek. The defining characteristics of this team are their passion for the game, desire to win and sense of fun when playing together.
