Knights now 3-0 in Hamilton Catholic high school play
Kyle Shallow ran for more than 100 yards and two touchdowns and Mike Brown caught a TD pass and ran for a major to lead the St. Thomas More Knights to a 37-21 win over the Cardinal Newman Cardinals in Hamilton Catholic high school senior football action at STM Friday afternoon.
With the win More is now 3-0 on the season and moves into first place in the HWCAA, while the defending league champion Cardinals are 2-1.
The Knights employed a mix of running and passing by quarterback C.J. Paduano along with an aggressive defence to take a 27-7 lead at halftime.
With the commanding lead the Knights ran the ball for most of the second half.
Santino Gallo added three single-point converts and two field goals and Jordan Brucculeri caught a two-point convert pass for More.
Newman gave up a safety in the first quarter.
Dan Peterman, Eric Mezzalira and Jake Marquette scored touchdowns for Newman.
Peterman also kicked three converts.
Marquette, a Grade 11 transfer from Cathedral, turned in a gutsy effort at quarterback.
He tried to rally the Cardinals in the second half, often carrying the ball himself in the face of swarming Knights’ defenders.
