Mountaineers to play in juniior college tournament
While the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) is taking its holiday break from regular league play, the Mohawk men’s basketball team will be busy.
The Mountaineers head to Phoenix, Arizona the end of the month, to take part in the Maricopa County Holiday Basketball Classic at Phoenix College.
“We think it is a good opportunity for us to get away as a group to prepare for the second half of the season,” said Mountaineers’ head coach Brian Jonker. “We have a wide gap in ages, from our group of older guys to our first and second year players. It is one more chance for them to spend time together. I think it is very important for the on going competitiveness of the program for the young guys to learn as much as the can from the older guys on and off the court. With the weather the way it has been (in Hamilton) it doesn’t hurt that we will get to spend some of the holiday in 30 degree temperatures.”
Mohawk played in this junior college event five years ago and were winless in three games.
They came close in one contest, but were defeated handily in the other two.
Jonker said the Mountaineers will see a couple of the same teams again, but he feels he has a different squad this time.
“We are a much different team than the last time we went,” said Jonker. “I think we will be able to compete with their size. We expect to get three very good games while we are there and that can also only help us going forward.”
The Mountaineers open tournament action against the host Phoenix College Bears, on Dec. 28 at 8 p.m. (ET).
Game two is slated for Dec. 29 at 2 p.m. against the Cochise College Apaches from Douglas, Arizona.
Mohawk’s third game is set for Dec. 30 at 4 p.m. against the South Mountain Community College Cougars from Phoenix.
