Master Alvey smashes five boards with a front elbow strike.

Martial arts instructor achieves coveted black belt ranking

Dennis Alvey, owner and chief instructor at Ancaster’s 88 Dragon’s Martial Arts Academy, recently successfully tested for the 7th-degree master level black belt.

Alvey has devoted more 30 years of hard work, sweat and determination towards achieving the status.

The exam consisted of Master Alvey performing a one-hour demonstration that included traditional patterns known as katas, prearranged step sparring, self-defence practices and multiple board-breaking techniques, followed by an oral theory exam.

The grading was held in conjunction with the CANAM Taekwon-do championships in Oakville, where Alvey’s students won more thean 20 medals.
