Junior football season underway

Sherwood, Westmount and MacNab battling in Division 1

 By Mark Newman, News staff

Can the Sherwood Saints make it three junior football crowns in a row?

After winning the public school Division 2 championship that past two seasons and not surrendering a point in 2011, the Saints have moved up to Division 1 this year.

“It’s going to be very tough,” said Sherwood head coach Steve Green, who noted a lot of players from last year’s squad have moved up to senior football.

Green takes over the junior Saints from Paul Woods, who is off for the year.

Zack Howard is the starting quarterback.

Joining him in the backfield are returnees Luc Jackson, Brent Ellis and Brandon Koklis.

The defence is anchored by lineman Fletcher Stanton.

After losing heart-breaker to Westdale in last season’s Division 1 final, the Westmount Wildcats are looking to return to the championship on June 8.

Jordan Gurman is back at quarterback.

Other returnees on offence include: running back Eric Blake, centre Eric Bartolini, tight end Greg Hutter and receiver Henry Tan.

Blake ran for some big yardage at an April 19 scrimmage against Highland.

On defence cornerback Matt Walker and linebackers Max Polyoka and Lance Hannaford are back from last season.

The Sir Allan MacNab Lions join Sherwood, Waterdown and Westdale in Division 1 Group A.

Westmount is playing in Group B along with Delta, Orchard Park and Sir Winston Churchill.

The Hill Park Rams and Barton Barons will compete against Highland, Glendale and Sir John A. Macdonald in Division 2/

Dave Cuthbertson is the new head coach of the Rams.

He’ll be looking for leadership from returning defensive lineman Mike Williams, who also plays tight end and fullback and new quarterback Tyler Goldman.

A full slate of exhibition and regular season games are on the schedule this week including Highland taking on Barton at noon today (Thursday) and Macdonald meeting Hill Park at 2 p.m. to kick-off regular season action.

Both games are at Ivor Wynne Stadium.

This season’s schedule sees Division 1 teams play two exhibition games and three regular season games and Division 2 clubs play four regular season games.
