Dundas, Ontario native Mackenzie Hughes held on to the top 10, and helped move his Kent State team into a second place tie, in the second round of the NCAA Men’s Golf Championship regional qualifier Friday.
With one round left, Kent State is nine strokes back of first place Southern California and seven strokes ahead of sixth place Notre Dame. The top five teams will move on to the finals.
Hughes shot a second round 69, finishing with four birdies and nine pars in the last 13 holes. The Highland Secondary School graduate rebounded from a bogey on the first hole and another bogey on the fifth hole to finish two under par on the day.
With his opening round one under par 70, Hughes left the course Friday afternoon four strokes behind the tournament leader in a three way tie for ninth place.
