For the second time in two weeks, the Ancaster Avalanche went into extra time before their fate was decided. On Saturday night, James Mewse-Detrich’s slapshot from the right face-off circle on a power-play gave Port Colborne Pro-Fit Pirates a 6-5 overtime victory in Golden Horseshoe Conference Junior B Hockey action at the Morgan Firestone Arena.
The previous night, Ancaster fell 4-1 to St. Catharines in a re-match from the previous week. With Saturday’s defeat, the Avs’ winless streak stretched to four games.
Ancaster holds fifth place with a record of three wins and five losses
The Avalanche played the Buffalo Blades Tuesday night and tonight, Thursday, Ancaster hosts the Fort Erie Meteors at 7:30 p.m. The two clubs will play a return engagement at 7:15 p.m. Saturday night in the Fort Erie Leisure Plex.
Last Saturday’s match appeared to turn four minutes into the third when Spencer Fox fired a shot past Ancaster goalie Jeremy Currie. Cole Nagy, however, saved the day for Ancaster when he ripped a shot from the left face-off circle past the Port Colborne netminder with six seconds left to play in regulation time.
Also scoring for the Avalanche were Chris Klack, Mike Pollice, Harrison Domagala and Ryan Lewis.
Last Friday, St. Catharines roared into a 4-0 lead. Ryan Knill got Ancaster on the board at 7:30 of the final period on a play set up by Alex Panov and Luke Zupan.
