Dundas Valley curlers capture third

Dundas Valley Golf and Curling Club’s Team Simonits bantam boys curling squad finished in third place at the Ontario Provincial Championships held in Coldwater Feb 5-8.

Seeded in sixth, the team posted an impressive 5-2 win/loss record, tied for second best in this round-robin event, but dropped to third because of its 3-2 round-robin loss against defending champion Team Hall from Stroud. The earlier game counted as the tiebreaker for the second and third final placings. The new champion was Team Wanless from the Mississauga Golf and Country Club with a perfect 7-0 record.

Of the 7,000 youth curlers divided into three age classes across Ontario’s 193 clubs, 62 bantam boys teams began the Ontario playdowns in mid-December. The championship also doubled as a qualifier for the Ontario Winter Games in Muskoka Feb. 27 to March 2, where the top three Ontario teams will be joined by the top three from Northern Ontario. The Winter Games  involve over 3,500 athletes, coaches and officials participating in 23 winter sports.

Dundas’ Team Simonits is comprised of Ryan Proc of Ancaster playing the lead position, Matthew McGuire of Ancaster at second, Bryan Freve of St. Catharines at vice, Alexander Simonits of Waterdown at skip, coached by Dean McGuire.
