Christmastime is hockey time

Chedoke Selects hosting hockey tournament this week

 By Mark Newman, News Staff

Chedoke Twin Pad Arena will be buzzing with activity when the 15th annual Chedoke Christmas Select Tournament hits the ice on Friday.

Laura Laengerer, one of the tournament co-coordinators, said 56 teams from in and around the Hamilton area will be taking part in the friendly, non-contact event including six host Chedoke Select Express teams.

“We want people to feel welcome here in Hamilton,” said Laengerer, who noted tournament games will also be played at the Mohawk 4 Ice Centre and the Dave Andreychuk-Mountain Arena.

The tournament runs through the weekend and the championship games will be played at Chedoke.

Laengerer said the tournament includes novice, atom, pee wee, bantam, minor midget and midget teams featuring players from seven to 17.

While admission is free, everyone attending games at Chedoke and Mohawk are asked to bring non-perishable food items for Neighbour to Neighbour Centre.

Laengerer said the tournament is dedicated to the memory of Ian Blackman, a Chedoke Express player who died eight years ago from a brain tumour.
