Braves win Hamilton Catholic hockey crown

Matt Hogan scored 11:44 into overtime to give the St. Jean de Brebeuf Braves the Hamilton Catholic high school boys hockey championship Thursday afternoon.

The Braves stormed out to an early 2-0 lead against the Cardinal Newman Cardinals and held Newman off the scoreboard until five minutes into the second period. After that point, the teams traded goals in a fast-paced game with numerous scoring chances at both ends.

Zac Bramwell (2), Jake Morrison, Connor McVey and Dominic Procopio also scored for the Braves. Daniel DeLuco had a hat trick for the Cardinals, while Jacob Bianchi and Lucas Uggenti one each.

The Cardinals finished the regular season atop the league standings with a 9-1-2 record. The Braves went into the playoffs with a 7-4-1 record. The Cards beat Bishop Tonnos 2-1 in the semi-finals Tuesday to earn their way to the final; the Braves beat St. Thomas More 3-2.

The Braves will play a Halton contender (not determined yet) Monday for a chance to play Halton’s No. 1 team in the Golden Horseshoe Athletic Conference and earn a spot at OFSAA.
