Big night at Grightmire in Dundas

Dundas Real McCoys are riding an eight-game winning streak as they prepare to take on the Brantford Blast in the opening game of the John Ross Robertson Cup tonight, March 21 at J.L. Grightmire Arena.

The McCoys wrapped up the regular season with a four-game streak and then took Stoney Creek Generals in four games in the best-of-seven semifinal.

“Their general manager said at the start of the year, they were the team to beat, and now we get to find out for real,” said Dundas president and general manager Don Robertson. “Outside of (Matthew) Barnaby, we are fairly healthy and we will use this to prepare further for the intensity of the Allan Cup Tournament.

“We have every intention of putting forth our best effort to win this series because the Robertson Cup is one of the most prestigious hockey challenge cups in the world.  It is very important to our group.”

Dundas went 11 games without a loss during the regular season. The streak began with a 10-3 win over Stoney Creek on Friday, Nov. 22 and ended on Friday, Jan. 17 in a 3-2 shootout loss to Brantford.   The Blast began its season with an eight-game streak that began on November 1 with a 7-1 win over Welland and ended on Friday, December 6 with a 4-3 loss at Dundas.

As the season concluded, Dundas entered the playoffs on a high with a four-game winning streak that began with a 4-3 win over the Norwood Vipers.  The streak lasted until the end of the regular season when Dundas defeated the Blast 7-3 on Friday, Feb. 21.

Dundas led the league, winning 11 of its 12 home games after losing the opening home game 3-1 to Brantford on Friday Nov. 15.  They went on to post a 10-3 victory over Stoney Creek Generals on Friday, Nov. 22 and wound up the streak on the final night of the season with a 7-3 win over Brantford.   The McCoys were 11 and 1 at home and 7-3-0-2 on the road in 2013-14.

The season series between the two clubs finished 4-4 in games and Brantford was outscored by Dundas 28-21.

The best-of-seven series John Ross Robertson Cup Championship runs March 21 in Dundas, 7:30 p.m., March 23, Dundas in Brantford, 2 p.m., March 28 in Dundas, 7:30 p.m., and March 30  in Brantford, 2 p.m.

If necessary the teams will also play April 4 in Dundas 7:30 p.m., April 6 in Brantford, 2 p.m. and Monday, April 7 in Dundas, 7:30 p.m.
